Makerspace hivemind I want to start another project (surprising, right) which I can probably get done pretty quickly but would like your input on it. I want to make a sofa shelf that sits behind my sofa, like a so.
The main motivation for this is that my wife and I have our own sides and our chargers etc. are just on the floor, it would be so much nicer if we had a bit of space behind us. So features I need:
• sockets for chargers, maybe some with USB outlets for ease. Maybe one of those pop-up socket things but not sure how neat that would look. I was planning on simply adding upwards facing wall sockets, maybe some of the slightly fancier metal ones.
• little bit of storage/pockets for said devices and cables
• space for the TV remotes so I stop losing the damned things
Features I could add:
• RGB strip
• a lamp
• some other kind of lighting, maybe for reading like a gooseneck light
• side storage pockets for books etc.
• proper wood and dovetail joints because
Before I start working on it I was wondering if anyone had any input in case I’m missing something obvious/cool.
Upwards facing wall sockets might be prone to getting wet if people stand drinks on that shelf (which they will because its right there)
Can you not fit sockets with USB outlets on each side?
thanks Ken, you are very much right. I did ponder the same issue but one side of the sofa is in a wall corner, so no access there.
Pop-up sockets exist:
which might be neater (and safer) overall. The argument for flat upward-facing outlets is that I’m imagining there’d be less clutter poking out and might look a little neater as a flat surface - obviously assuming drinks would be banned and no-one would ever place them there. Unlikely. Probably still beats the current extension cable on the floor, though.
