Hi All,

Despite the lack of action on this project, I still plan to work on this next year. I’ve got a drum in the corner of the Hackspace which I plan to use for the outer casing of the furnace. Come spring I’ll get to work lining it and installing some propane burners.

I’ll post another update when I actually start construction.

I would love to reboot this project, if possible. I think a small furnace would be a fantastic addition to the space and would be a great group project to get involved with.

I would like to suggest we could make a space event one weekend, get everyone interested in, and build this thing!

@Takumo, what do we need to finish this off? Do we need to get any more materials or members who are interested in building? :slight_smile:

@Jagmills - Here’s a summary of the materials as I remember them:

We have:

  • A casing for the furnace – A small steel drum (about 10gal), quite thick steel.

We need:

  • Material for the fireproof lining, e.g. cement and sand
  • A crucible
  • Hoses, fittings, flashback arresters, and burner nozzles for the propane. (Welding torch hoses?)
  • Suitable PPE
